Phalaborwa player signs with Sekhukhune United
In what is sure to be a major career step, Ayabonga Mokgalaka has signed a three-year deal with Betway Premiership side Sekhukhune United.

PHALABORWA – Under the bright floodlights of top-flight football, a new local talent is stepping onto the national stage.
Ayabonga Magheba Mokgalaka (19) from Mashishimale has officially joined South African Betway Premiership side Sekhukhune United FC, taking a major step forward in his football career.
Mokgalaka signed a three-year contract with the Limpopo-based club in September 2025 and officially began training with the team on January 5. The young midfielder described the move as a dream opportunity.
“It is an honour and a privilege to join this team. This opportunity means a lot to me. I am excited to learn from experienced players, improve my game, and contribute to the team’s success. I will work hard every day to prove myself and make my family, community, and supporters proud,” said Mokgalaka.

Sekhukhune United FC first noticed Mokgalaka during the playoffs in Mokopane in August 2025, when he represented Phalaborwa United in the battle for qualification to the ABC Motsepe League on behalf of the Mopani district. His impressive performances caught the attention of the Betway Premiership club, paving the way for his recruitment.
Mokgalaka began his football journey at a young age and quickly realised his talent. His abilities were formally recognised in 2022 during the Kgoshigadi Mashishimale Shayi Soccer Tournament, where he was named player of the tournament.
Before joining Sekhukhune United FC, Mokgalaka played for Phalaborwa United for two years, helping the team secure promotion to the ABC Motsepe League.
He also gained experience with Brazil FC and Marumofase FC.
“It was so hard to find a team like Phalaborwa United where I could be seen by everyone. I am grateful for the platform it gave me,” he said.
Currently, Mokgalaka is playing in the Diski Development Challenge squad at Sekhukhune United FC and has not yet featured in the first team. Nevertheless, the young midfielder is focused on improving his skills and gaining experience.
