Runners join in PMC Marula fun

On Saturday, April 27 runners from all over the country descended on Phalaborwa to participate in the PMC Marula Family Marathon.

Desmond Mokgobu from Bochum was the men’s 10km open race winner in a time of 31:23. He was followed by two 21-year-old runners, Koketso Lekaka in a time of 32:12, and Rebaone Obotseng with 32:53 on the clock. Nobukhosi Tshuma won the 10km women’s open race. In the women’s half marathon, confusion prevailed on who the winner was.

Lerato Chiloane came in first and a few minutes later the top three women came in together, claiming that they were the top three. After some deliberation it was decided that Patience Garauziye from Zimbabwe was the winner, in second place was Dikeledi Magara from the Free State and in third place was Rudo Mhanderwa from Zimbabwe.

Given Makgoba from the University of Limpopo obtained first place in the 21.1km men’s race with a time of 01:03:32. He was followed by Lucky Mohale and Abel Tshibanda in second and third respectively. Ebby Ledwaba from PMC told the Herald that they had invested R1m to present the event and that the winners of the half marathon (21.1km) won R21 000 each.

The 10km race winners won R10 000 each. He said that the annual marathon is important for Phalaborwa and surrounding areas, as it is a way for the mine to show its support for the Mopani region. The MEC for Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Rodgers Monama was also among the runners who participated in the event.
