Phalaborwa Rugby Club hosts inaugural Harold Vorster Day

Phalaborwa Rugby Club hosted its first Harold Vorster Day, celebrating the local rugby star with community matches and a dominant PRC 1 victory.

PHALABORWA – Phalaborwa Rugby Club (PRC) successfully hosted its first annual Harold Vorster Day this past weekend, a significant occasion on the local rugby calendar.

The event was created to honour the achievements of Harold Vorster, who hails from Phalaborwa and has built an impressive career in professional rugby.

Ruben Coetzer of PRC said the day was intended not only as a celebration of his journey but also as an inspiration to young players, demonstrating what can be achieved through discipline, commitment, and passion for the sport.

Electric atmosphere at club grounds

“The atmosphere at the club grounds was electric, with strong support from the community. The event featured competitive fixtures across the club’s teams, with both excitement and emotion on display as players gave their all.

“The second team, affectionately known as ‘Bier en Pap’ put up a brave fight against Letaba 1 in a tightly contested encounter,” he added.

Narrow defeat for PRC 2

Despite their determination and a strong second-half push, PRC 2 saw their winning streak come to an end, narrowly losing 21–26.

The team was only five points behind at the final whistle, reflecting just how close the contest was.

PRC 1 dominate and unveil new kit

The highlight of the day came from the PRC 1 side, who took on UniLim.

“PRC 1 not only delivered a dominant performance but also marked a historic moment for the club with the unveiling of their new first-team kit.

“The kit, sponsored by NTT Toyota Phalaborwa, represents a significant partnership for the club and was met with excitement from players and supporters alike,” says Coetzer.

From the opening whistle, Phalaborwa controlled the tempo of the game, combining structured play with clinical finishing to secure a comprehensive 44–7 victory.

Man of the Match shines

Individual honours went to Rotenda “Ziggy” Nethenzheni, who was named Man of the Match following a standout performance that contributed significantly to the team’s dominant win.

His efforts were widely praised by teammates and coaches, underlining his growing importance within the squad.
