Merensky learner cracks national top 10 in cycling
Cyclists from three Tzaneen schools raced at the national schools championships in Stellenbosch, where a brother and sister both improved on their previous results.
TZANEEN – Tzaneen was well represented at the XCO South African Schools Championships, held recently at Coetzenburg in Stellenbosch, with local cyclists delivering commendable performances.
Merensky Agricultural Academy learner Elrick Opperman was among the standouts, finishing seventh in the boys’ u/16 category to secure a place in the national top 10. His schoolmate, Luan Botha, finished 11th in the boys’ u/14 category, narrowly missing out on a top 10 position.
A quick rise through the ranks
Speaking to the Herald, Opperman said breaking into the top 10 was an amazing feeling and reflected the hard work he had put into training throughout the year. His goal had been to improve on last year’s 11th-place finish.
Remarkably, Opperman only took up cycling in 2024. He began training with a friend the following year and soon developed a passion for the sport. After competing for the first time last year, he was selected as a wildcard to represent Merensky at the national schools’ championships.
Proud parents count the sacrifices
His mother said she was immensely proud of his achievement, praising his discipline and commitment to training. The Botha family also celebrated a successful outing, with Luan and his younger sister, Milan, who represented Tzaneen Primary School, both improving on their previous performances.
Their mom, Toinette Botha, said she was proud of both children and that the family had enjoyed the experience in Stellenbosch.
“As parents, we are incredibly proud and humbled by what both our children have achieved through cycling. Their journey has required many sacrifices, countless hours of training, careful planning, and a great deal of time and commitment from the entire family. Looking back, we can confidently say that every sacrifice has been worthwhile,” she said.
Road racing adds to a busy season
Elrick also competed in the South African Youth Road Cycling Championships in Oudtshoorn from September 25 to 27.
He competed in three events against some of the country’s best young cyclists, achieving excellent results: ninth place in the road race, 11th place in the criterium and 15th place in the time trial.
Schools applaud their riders
Hoërskool Ben Vorster was also represented by brothers Jean and Wynand Martin, who delivered strong performances.
The school congratulated them on their achievements, while Merensky also applauded its learners and all those who participated in the competition.
