Investigation gets momentum

A senior investigator, tasked by the provincial SAPS commissioner to investigate the dockets and evidence found at the Fitnique building, visited Middelburg this week to take statements from police managers who are being investigated for negligence.

Two SAPS special unit commanders, the former commander of the serious and violent crimes unit, and the present commander of the family and sexual offences unit, are being investigated.

The Observer were also asked to give a statement though it is still unclear whether anyone would be prosecuted for negligence. Hundreds of dockets containing information of wanted criminals, their spouses, their crimes and the complainants in the crimes committed, were found abandoned in the building by the SVU alongside at least three evidence bags, containing the underwear of rape victims.

After the Observer exposé all the senior managers of the SAPS, including the commanders of the police station, organised crime, the former SVU and family and sexual offences unit, flocked to the building to secure the abandoned police files and rape evidence.

The provincial commissioner was tasked by the national detective head office to spearhead the investigation.

Statements have been obtained from all the top brass of the local SAPS.

It is impossible to say how many dockets and evidence bags were removed from the building by members of the public since the building stood vacant for over a year after both units moved out.
