VIDEO: Observer falls victim to burglars over Easter
The offices of the Middelburg Observer was broken into and ransacked by an unknown number of burglars between Saturday and Monday last week and an estimated R25 000 in cash stolen, as well as a single Canon camera.
Employees were greeted to broken windows and office doors at the start of the work week on Tuesday morning as the burglars left no door, cupboard or drawer untouched in what seems to have been a quest for strictly cash.
A hole was even broken through a solid brick wall to gain entry into a room containing mostly stationary which was left untouched.
Using tools belonging to factory workers at the back, what the burglars did manage to find was every department’s kitty money collected for staff birthdays and similar occasions, a variety of food ranging from biltong to sweets, as well as cold drink which they had the time to enjoy during their time inside.

Evidence suggests that the burglars entered through the back of the building and cut alarm wires to gain entry.
All department offices and every staff member’s desk was searched, including offices of the Classifieds Department, Advertising, Accounts and Admin, the IT, Production and Layout Department, as well as the editorial offices.
The kitchen was not left out and neither reception.
No electronic devices and other such valuables such as laptops, computers, cameras and lenses were stolen – with the exception of a Canon Camera that’s shared among the Advertising Department.
Police were unable to retrieve fingerprints as it appears that the suspects were all wearing gloves.
