Update: Murderers still on the loose

The murderers of local businessman, Tony da Silva, have yet to be arrested more than a month after he was killed in front of witnesses at a traffic light in Middelburg

Mr Da Silva was pulled out of his vehicle and shot in the chest at close range before his attackers fled the scene in his Nissan NP200.

The vehicle was later found, burnt almost beyond recognition, in eMalahleni.

An eyewitness saw the whole incident happen. Residents in Komati, from where Mr Da Silva was travelling to Middelburg, reported a suspicious vehicle parked in the area on the day of his murder.

Mr Da Silva owned the OK Grocer in the Komati Village. He was allegedly followed from his workplace and confronted in Middelburg on his way home.

Despite reports that the police were in hot pursuit of the murderers, it seems that none of the leads have led to an arrest.

The Middelburg Police have since offered a reward to anyone that can provide them with information.

Brandus van Jaarsveld, Mr Da Silva’s brother-in-law, said it is worrying that the investigation has gone so quiet.

Mr Van Jaarsveld has since taken over the management of the OK Grocer on behalf of his sister Wilma. He said that he has made security improvements at the business. The daily takings are now being transported by a security company. Mr Da Silva had a large amount of money, hidden in his socks, at the time of his murder.

Capt. Khanyisile Zwane said no arrests have been made as of yet.
