Update: Will they be prosecuted?

Two special unit commanders; the commander of the FCS, and former head of the disbanded SVC unit, is being investigated for negligence after more than 500 discarded police files on violent criminals and their victims, as well as evidence bags with the underwear of rape victims, were found discarded in the Fitnique building in the last quarter of 2012.

During that time, the building stood vacant for over a year.

The Observer uncovered the cache during a visit to the building, like countless other civilians looking to invest in property.

It is unclear how many people have entered the buildings since the units vacated, and it’s equally unclear how many evidence bags and dockets had been removed before the Observer blew the whistle.

Three days after the article, more than 15 organised crime policemen, and commanders from different units, accompanied the Observer to the building to secure the files and evidence bags against further public scrutiny and looting.

The Mpumalanga provincial police commissioner was tasked by the national head office to spearhead the investigation.

According to the investigator, the docket was sent to Middelburg Magistrates Court for a decision and the outcome can be expected by Friday (today) or early next week.

The files contained sensitive information on violent criminals and their victims.
