Newspaper threatened – ‘The house concerns no-one’

A journalist had her life threatened after she contacted the person responsible for the occupants of a house in Klip Street from which suspected prostitutes operate.

Six women have been put out of the house a couple of weeks ago, after residents complained about their nocturnal activities.

The woman responsible for subletting of the house, Caroline (surname unknown), said that students rent the house from her. She acted as soon as she was confronted with complaints about them.

She says that she is a middle-man who rents houses from agents and then sublets rooms.

“I rent a lot of houses. I sublet to policemen and all types of people. The house in Klip Street had students in them.”

Caroline says that she chased six of the occupants away after finding out that they were not students. Four girls, all registered students at Nkangala FET, and two men remain in the house.

Despite actions taken, residents in the area are adamant that the house is still used for prostitution with the Middelburg Observer receiving regular complaints.

“I cannot be held responsible for the prostitutes in the street in front of the house. They walk up and down the street and I cannot do anything about it, just as no one else in the street has been able to do something about it,” Caroline said.

A week ago, a Middelburg Observer journalist witnessed firsthand, how cars in the street are lured into the specific yard. The gate, that always stood wide open, was almost completely shut.

A woman peeped out of a small opening and waved cars into the yard. When the gate was opened wider for the cars to enter, two scantily clad women could be seen waiting inside the yard.

“I don’t know what the remaining girls are doing, if they are doing the same thing. But they are registered students,” said Caroline.

Estate agents trying to sell the house struggle to find buyers. One agent said, with the agreement that he would remain anonymous, that it feels like someone is scaring off buyers.

“They all have the same story, almost to the word. As if someone is telling them the same thing.”

Another agent said that even if the prostitutes are removed from that particular house, they will simply find another house to do business from.

A planned interview with Caroline was cancelled on Wednesday morning. She said that her husband, Fofo, threatened to kill the journalist if anything is written or their names are mentioned.

“The house does not concern anybody. My husband said that he is going to buy it from the owner. We have a lot of business in town and do not want our names mentioned. He says that he does not trust any journalist because they twist stories the way they want to.”
