‘Space cakes’ for sale
A planned 'pens down' festival at OR Tambo park in Mhluzi, seems like a harmless way for matrics to have fun after writing their final exam paper.
That is until you see that the organisers are advertising drugs, as part of the party line-up.
Has fear for the law stooped to such an all time low that people are advertising drugs for sale? That was the question the Middelburg Observer asked to police this week.
The organisers advertise skunk and chronic cakes along with vodka shooters and cocktails on sale during the Mtoni Pens Down festival. (Mtoni is slang for Middelburg.)
A BBM broadcast was sent to the Middelburg Observer by Innocent Thabo Skosana, under the account Ronetic. On Facebook Skosana lists himself as the founder of Ronetic Productions. He replied to a BBM message saying that he is not one of the organisers and simply shared a message he received.
The festival promises a DJ line-up, Hookah Session Room (VIP room) and warns against fighting and racism. In one of the Facebook ads, the organisers warn that FOFO’s security will be “all over the park. So no sgebengu la! No fighting!” (no criminals, no fighting).
Manqoba Que Hlanze, one of the organisers, said that they weren’t planning on actually selling drugs, they simply advertised it to draw more people. He admitted that the brazen advertising, was not such a good idea and promised to fix the info on Facebook.
• Capt. Zwane of the Mhluzi police said that the police will be highly visible during the festive season and that festivals needs to have a licence obtained from the municipality.
“We cannot do anything before they sell, but if they do sell, we will be there to arrest them.”
• Muffins containing cannabis are commonly known as space cakes. Chronic and skunk are types of cannabis which varies in strength and quality. Amidst national and international pressure to legalise the use of cannabis, it is still classified as a drug and the possession or use thereof remains illegal in South Africa.
