Update: Murphy’s law
Keagan Dexter Murphy, who was found guilty on charges of dealing in drugs and corruption, is yet to be sentenced.
Murphy, who if no exceptional or mitigating circumstances are found, could face a minimum sentence of 15 year imprisonment.
He was taken into custody shortly after judgement was passed in the Middelburg court in October.
The investigation revealed how he crossed the border to Mozambique several times a month.
He was also found guilty for offering police officers R50 000 in return for his release on the day of his arrest.
Murphy, who resides in Gauteng, claimed he worked for KK Travels, which was later exposed as a fake company. He was out on R50 000 bail, for the duration of the court case.
The matter was put on the Carolina Magistrates Court roll for Monday. Sentencing proceedings had to be postponed because Murphy has ended his mandate with defense lawyer Ismael Essa and has since appointed new legal representation. The matter was postponed for two weeks when he will appear in the Middelburg Magistrates Court. He remains in custody until then.
