Update: ‘We will be discreet’
A web of lies is spun around the house in Klip Street. The rent money paid for the house, is being made through prostitution.
How many people gain from the criminal activities is unclear. Ironically the pimp responsible for the prostitutes was the most straight forward and honest about the situation.
Wilson Ndlovu contacted the Middelburg Observer after a furious Caroline Grobler threatened him with legal action and to end his lease if the Observer “does not clear her name”.
He admitted that prostitutes live in the house and said that he is the man responsible for them. According to him he has been renting from Mrs Grobler for almost a year.
Mr Ndlovu said that he hoped to renew his lease with Mrs Grobler and did not want anything to jeopardize their relationship.
He promised to talk to the women staying in the house to be more discreet and quiet.
“I have children myself. We will be more discreet. Children must be protected.”
Mr Ndlovu claimed that Mrs Grobler was under the impression that students were renting rooms from him. Leaving the question why Mrs Grobler previously told the Middelburg Observer that she herself put some of the tenants out of the house because they were not registered students and why she claimed that she was called out of the blue, by Mr Ndlovu, she claims she does not know.
Caroline Grobler’s version:
Mrs. Grobler was contacted about the house in October. She said that she rents out rooms to students. She also said that she evicted six of the girls after finding out that they were not registered at any learning facility.
Mrs Grobler proceeded to warn the journalist that her husband, whom she named as Fofo, was a very “nutorious and dangerous” man. Someone that will not hesitate to kill the journalist if anything is written about her or him.
She now vehemently deny that she said anything of the sort.
During the last telephonic discussion with Mrs Grobler, she said that she sublets to Mr Ndlovu with the permission of the house owner. According to her, Mr Ndlovu contacted her to rent the house after she had a meeting with Anton Meyer in Dros and saying that she wants nothing to do with it anymore because it is tarnishing her business reputation.
This meeting had to take place somewhere in November or December. Because there was no mention of this meeting when Mrs Grobler was contacted by the paper for the first time and she still took responsibility for the house. At that stage she said that she had a family member staying in the house to keep an eye on things.
Mrs Grobler claims that she is only the middleman, paying the rent money Mr Ndlovu pays to her, over to the house owner. She denied gaining anything from or having any involvement with the house.
“Do you see me standing on the corner showing my p***?”
She denied saying that Fofo is her husband and claimed that she is being targeted because the journalist is upset because she married a “white man.” She also alleged that the journalist called her a “stupid k*****” on several occasions. She further claimed that the article has caused her to lose millions.
An sms sent by her reads: “I did rent the house… it was more than three months back … I gave the house to Wilson Ndlovu.”
The Meyer family’s version:
When Anton Meyer, the house owner, was contacted last week, he said that he planned to meet with Mrs Grobler that same afternoon after hearing about the complaints.
A meeting Mrs Grobler said did not take place.
“He came to my shop and left a note saying that I should phone the Middelburg Observer.”
He claimed that he was unaware of the situation and thought that Mrs Grobler had sorted out the problem.
Mr Meyer started dealing with Mrs Grobler directly, side-stepping the estate agent who handled the lease, after he did not want to refuse her rent money in order for a eviction order to be delivered.
His mother, Miemie Meyer, came to the Middelburg Observer and showed us a contract, claiming that Mrs Grobler has only been renting from them for the last two months. The contract stated that they have since been contacted by an estate agent from eMalahleni who had someone interested in the house.
The contract between Mr Meyer and Mrs Grobler stated that she would buy the house for R850 000 and give him occupational rent of R8 000 per month.
The new buyer, who allegedly works for Eskom, could not be traced, but he is said to be an upstanding member of the community with no ties to Mrs Grobler or Mr Ndlovu.
• The Middelburg Observer was invited for an interview with Mr Meyer. It could not be done before deadline due to time constraints.
The facts as it stands:
• The house is being used for prostitution.
• Anton Meyer is financially gaining from the situation by receiving monthly rent of R8 000, some of it supposedly going to his ex-wife who co-owns the house.
• Complaints about the house were received mere days after Mrs Grobler started renting it in September.
• Nothing is being done about it by authorities.
