Murdered in the street
The man who was found brutally murdered, laying face down, on the side of the road in Hlalamnandi, has been identified as Mr Lungelo Jakuja (38).
The deceased is a man from the Eastern Cape, had worked for Johnson Crane Hire for eight years, and had just recently moved to the Johnson Crane Hostel in Hlalamnandi.
Churchgoers were greeted by the disturbing image, ahead of their Sunday services.
The image of a man laying on his face dead, has left the small community in shock and with sudden questions about safety in the area.
There are are two versions of what might have happened Saturday night, leading to the death of Mr Jakuja.
According to a community member (who can not be mentioned because he is a minor), it could have been a robbery gone wrong, because the man left the tavern and went to a house in the next street where there was a party. He was seen with money in his wallet. He then left the house to go to the hostel where he lived, which is just around the corner. It is said that “he was attacked and stabbed and left to die”.
According to police a witness said that a quarrel between the deceased and three men broke out at a local tavern around 00:00, just before its closure. The witness further added that the quarrel continued outside, leading to the three men attacking Mr Jakuja.
The corpse of the deceased was later found on a street corner. However, the body was later moved by five men to the hostel, a distance of about 750 metres.
“The victim sustained no stab wounds but multiple head injuries,” Captain Khanyisile Zwane of the SAPS said.
A close source also confirmed that the victim was not stabbed, but hit with a blunt object on his head.
“The killer left me widowed and my children with one parent, they will get what’s coming to them,” said Mrs Noma Jakuja, wife of the deceased, to the Observer.
“I will be strong,” she added while sobbing.
The victim will be buried at his home town in the Eastern Cape next week Saturday.
Three suspects have been detained since Sunday afternoon, including two minors. Bongani Shabangu (20) and the two minors appeared in court on Wednesday. The case was postponed to 18 December for formal bail application.
