The accident occurred shortly after 19:00 when a man driving in the oncoming lane, collided with the woman and her passenger.

According to witnesses the man crossed the wide grass median into oncoming traffic where the collision occurred.

The driver of the vehicle which caused the accident was immediately taken from the scene for blood-alcohol tests.

The man appeared very confused immediately after the accident and allegedly attempted to assault a member of the public who asked him why he was driving in the oncoming lane.

A large number of Eastdene residents gathered on the scene shortly after the accident.

The identity of the deceased is yet to be released.
