Election 2016 update: Final results out

The final 2016 Local Government Election results for Steve Tshwete Municipality has been released by the IEC, and not only did the EFF grab seven seats, but the FF+ also scored a bonus seat, bringing their total tally of seats to two.

The ANC retained the council with 32 seats, followed by the DA’s 17.

The ruling party got 64 124 of the total votes, compared to the DA’s 33 603 and the EFF’s 13 027.

Support for the ANC is down by 12% compared to 2011 where it garnered 67,82% of votes.

Apart from the rise of the EFF, the FF+ also grew its support base with 4%, detracting around 10% of the DA’s vote in all six DA wards.

A date for the inauguration of councilors have not been determined.

Mayor Mike Masina will head the council as Mayor for a second term.

• The ANC scored 66,22% of votes for the Nkangala District Council, compared to the DA’s 16,44% and the EFF’s 12,84%.
