Update: Captain shot wife, then himself

The memorial service of Captain John Maredi (43) and his ex-wife, Ms Thepiso Maredi, was held at the Eric Jiyane hall in Mhluzi on Wednesday morning.

Family, co-workers , friends as well as the Mhluzi community came to pay their last respect to the estranged couple.

Emotions, bitterness and division between the families of the couple was felt as they entered the hall on Wednesday morning.

The local detective shot and killed his wife before turning the pistol on himself on Friday evening. SAPS informed the Observer of the ongoing marriage dispute between the couple.

It is alleged that the Captain dropped off his two boys aged 13 and 8 at his flat in Chromeville before heading to his estranged wife’s place at Matailane.

He used his work pistol in the brutal killing of his wife and his alleged suicide.

A friend of Ms Maredi heard two gun shots and phoned the police. The police had to break the door open. The couple were declared dead on the scene.

An inquest docket were opened according to captain Khanyisile Zwane of the SAPS.

A funeral service will be held in Ga-Silala, Burgersfort on the 4th of July at 07:00. It is however not known whether the estranged couple will be buried together, added Capatin Zwane.
