Video: Fight over cold drinks and ‘favourites’

"We always hire men to come beat him. But it is too expensive, so we decided that we will beat him ourselves!"

A huge crowd gathered on Tuesday when furious prostitutes living in the old Geen & Richards building in SADC Street took on their caretaker.

They accused him of scaring away clients by demanding that customers entering the premises buy him a cold drink first. They also claim that he has ‘favourite girls’ to which he takes the customers, causing the other girls in the building to lose out on business.

“Only certain girls make a lot of money because he tells the customers where to go,” one woman complained.

The women say that their rent has been pushed up from R3 500 per room to R4 000 per room, an amount they are not able to pay.

The fight that broke out saw upset women taking a stand against a barefoot man on the sidewalk next to the busy SADC Street. Two uniformed police officers on the scene, listened what the fight was about and then turned and left.

Upon the arrival of the Middelburg Observer journalists, the man, defiantly dared them to enter the building.

He also yelled in a loud voice: “Take my picture! Take my picture!” before proudly posing by crossing his arms across his chest, much to the delight of the crowd. This is the same man that can be seen on a previous video, warning journalists to “never come back here again” after he was instructed by Deon Strydom to keep them out of the building.

Mr Strydom is in charge of the renting out of rooms.

• Mr Strydom did not answer his phone and did not respond to a message left.
