Traffic officer Theo Rapoto who was badly injured when he was hit by a car in Samora Machel Street is out of ICU and is recovering well.

The bizarre accident was allegedly caused by a reckless driver.

James Murphy (21), who was driving without a licence, was speeding from the direction of the mall, and when the traffic officer ran in front of his car to try and stop him, he drove over him, into another vehicle and fled the scene.

The badly injured officer has since been recovering well with injuries to his right leg and upper body.

The suspect, James Murphy (21), appeared in court last week Tuesday on five charges including: reckless and negligent driving, failure to comply when stopped by a traffic officer, attempted murder, driving without a licence and failure to stop after causing an accident.

The suspect has since been released on bail of R1 500 and is expected to appear in court again on August 18th.
