Video: Tractor driver killed

A 40 year contract worker from Rockdale was killed during a freak tractor accident while he was working on the old Belfast road on Wednesday morning.

The deceased, Mr Ronny Sipho Mabena, was found by his co-workers under the tractors’ tyre which crushed his head.

According to the Project Manager, Mr Fan Louw, he was informed of the unfortunate accident by a safety representative.

“We have a safety rep on site and provide training regularly. We understand he was not suppose to be working, so when co-workers were passing by, they noticed the tracker idling on its own. When they looked underneath he was found laying there lifeless, no one really knows what happened to Mr Mabena.”

Mr Mabena was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

“We were not told what really happened to my husband. His brother phoned me around 10:00 to tell me the devastating news,” said Mrs Sarah Mabena (37).

“He was such a good man loved by many,” added Mrs Mabena.

Mr Mabena leaves behind his wife and two boys.

• Funeral arrangements were not confirmed by the time of print.
