Video: Municipality brought to a standstill by fire

The municipality was evacuated on Wednesday after a fire broke out in the archives of the second floor, where the Mayor and Speaker's offices are located.

Toxic smoke quickly enveloped the building, spurring firemen, who earlier battled a raging fire at Reclam in the industrial area for hours, to evacuate the entire building.

According to the acting municipal manager, Mr Mandla Mnguni, no structural damage was caused by the fire, which broke out at around 15:00. .

The fire however ravaged the flammable documents in storage in the archive and, Mr Mnguni says the extent of the damage in regards to the loss of data, still have to be determined.

He says that the fire department suspect that the fire was caused by an electrical short, though they are still searching for the point of ignition.

The entire building had to be ventilated to ensure the safety of personnel who, by Thursday, slowly started to occupy their offices on the ground and first floors.
