Update: Medicine removed by Hospital

The medicine discovered in an open garage in De Villiers Street, has been removed by the Middelburg Hospital pharmacy and handed back to the Primary Health Care clinics for proper disposal.

The medicine was the responsibility of the clinics and is said to have been left behind when Primary Health Care offices moved to new premises. Why expired medicine was stored and not destroyed, remains unanswered.

Medicine, including needles, syringes, vaccines and antiretrovirals, were discovered after police chased a suspect into a yard of what seemed to be a deserted house.

An open garage door led to the discovery of a mixed cocktail of medicine, some of which expired as far back as 2011.

Questions about the abandoned medicine sent to Primary Health Care sister Margaret Skhosana was referred to the communication office of the Department of Health.

Media liaison officer, Christopher Nobela, received the media enquiry on Monday 18 April. During a follow-up phone call on Wednesday 20 April Mr Nobela said that he was awaiting feedback from Middelburg in order to be able to respond. He failed to do so at the time of going to press.
