6 365 crimes reported in Middelburg
According to the national crime statistics 6 365 crimes were reported in Middelburg for the year 2017/2018, the Mhluzi Police Station registered 2 522 crimes during the same time.
• Middelburg ranked third in the ten worst precincts in Mpumalanga with its neighbour eMalahleni taking the top spot and only Nelspruit separating the two.
• Middelburg took the top spot for the town with the most driving under the influence cases reported. Mhluzi followed in third place.
• Middelburg came fourth with the most robberies reported.
• Middelburg came third in the province for the town with the most theft of motor vehicle or motorcycle cases, as well as for theft out of motor vehicle cases. Mhluzi came in fourth for theft and 10th for theft out of vehicles.
• When it comes to property related crimes, eMalahleni took the top spot and Middelburg followed in second place for burglary, both at residential premises and business premises.
eMalahleni ranked the worst precinct in South Africa for both of the above-mentioned crimes.
Here is a breakdown of the official crime statistics in Middelburg and Mhluzi:
Middelburg:
• Murder – 18 (compared to 12 the previous year)
• Attempted murder – 23 (compared to 17 the previous year)
• Sexual offences – 46 (compared to 55 the previous year)
• Assault with grievous bodily harm – 218 (compared to 243 the previous year)
• Common assault – 300 (compared to 313 the previous year)
• Common robbery – 154 (compared to 182 the previous year)
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances – 280 (compared to 261 the previous year)
Mhluzi:
• Murder – 18 (compared to 32 the previous year)
• Attempted murder – 14 (compared to 23 the previous year)
• Sexual offences – 51 (compared to 55 last year)
• Assault with grievous bodily harm – 288 (compared to 317 last year)
• Common assault – 255 (compared to 264 last year)
• Common robbery – 40 (compared to 57 last year)
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances – 93 (compared to 98 last year)
Crimes that increased:
Driving under the influence increased in Middelburg with 333 cases opened compared to the previous year’s 299 cases.
Commercial crimes soared in Middelburg with 451 cases reported this year compared to 276 the previous year.
Non-residential robberies saw an increase from 59 cases the previous year to 64 this year.
Three more cases of rape were reported in Middelburg this year with 36 cases reported compared to 33 the year before.
Theft out of motor vehicles increased in both Mhluzi and Middelburg. Mhluzi had 143 compared to the previous year and in Middelburg 749 cases were reported compared to 692 the year before.
