Foreign national accused of brutal murder

A foreign national, accused of brutally murdering a woman in Mhluzi last week, has briefly appeared in the Middelburg Magistrate Court.

Amanuel Heramo, was arrested in Pretoria on Wednesday 17 October, after police followed up on information about his whereabouts.

Mhluzi erupted into chaos after the naked body of a 25 year-old woman was discovered earlier on the same day. She had a plastic bag pulled over her head and her naked body was covered with a blanket.

Heramo’s bail application was set to start today (26 October) but it had to be postponed again after the interpreter fell ill.

The court could not rule on an application by the media to take photos of the accused in court, because the accused’s legal council have failed to obtain proper instructions from his client without an interpreter present.

The matter has been postponed until a later stage.

• During Heramo’s first appearance last week, foreign owned shops in Mhluzi were looted and foreigners were ordered out of the town. The looting also spilled over to Doornkop.
