Hawks raid multi-million drug den in Breyten

Two multi-million drug dens have been dismantled following an operation led by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit on 21 August.

It was incorrectly reported by several media houses that the drug den was situated in Middelburg, which led to confusion under residents.

Hawks spokesperson, Captain Lloyd Ramovha, confirmed that the unit seized narcotics and drug manufacturing equipment from a drug den which was being operated from a plot between Breyten and Carolina.

A storage facility housing chemicals and equipment for the den in Breyten, was also dismantled in Diepkloof, Soweto, where a 61 year-old female was found with 62 bags of acidic substance in her possession.

Seven other suspects where taken into custody on the plot, 7km out of Breyten, after being caught in the act of processing a drug called mandrax.
Equipment and mandrax tablets to the street value of R210 million were confiscated from the scene.

Captain Ramovha stated that the drug den is part of a drug syndicate operating on a national level and that the suspects in custody play key roles within the syndicate.

The 61 year-old female from Diepkloof remains in custody following her first court appearance yesterday, at the Protea Magistrate’s Court in Gauteng.
The case has been remanded to 23 August for further investigation.

The other seven suspects from Breyten are scheduled to appear in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court later today.
