Cop killled in Mabuza motorcade crash identified

Officer Shongwe had 31-years of uninterrupted service in the SAPS at the time of his death.

The Presidential Protections Services member of the SAPS that was killed when the vehicle he was traveling in alongside two colleagues overturned on Sunday, has been identified as 56-year old Warrant Officer Thomas Shongwe.

Officer Shongwe passed away when the vehicle he was traveling in ahead of Deputy President David Mabuza, rolled between Woestalleen and Arnot around 10:30 on Sunday morning.

The tyre of the vehicle burst, resulting in the fatal crash.

His two colleagues, who’ve not been identified, is still in Life Midmed Hospital after sustaining critical injuries.

Officer Shongwe had 31-years of uninterrupted service in the SAPS at the time of his death.

He served as in-transit VIP protector for most of his police career.

Officer Shongwe is survived by his wife and three children.
