Municipality at work to patch up damage at monumental gravesite
The damage at the Anglo-Boer War memorial site in Karee Street, Kanonkop has been mostly cleared.
A recent storm caused a tree to fall over the gravesite, as well as cause damage to the surrounding fence.
The Steve Tshwete Local Municipality responded in less then a day to begin the process of clearing the debris.
Strong winds were thought to be the cause of the tree toppling over.
All damages to the fence is still currently being patched up.
The community will welcome such a swift response to the restoration of such a prominent feature of the area.
The memorial serves as a monument to a particularly difficult time in Middelburg’s past, as the site was used as a concertation camp during the conflict.
