According to information circulating in a local traffic alert group, a stop-and-go traffic control operation is believed to be the result of roadworks in the area.
Video footage shows hundreds of vehicles backed up along the R555, with traffic moving slowly.
Motorists using the route are urged to drive with extreme caution, as congestion and changing road conditions could make travelling difficult and dangerous.
