Motorists urged to be extra cautious due to protest action

SACP and Cosatu in to protest at the Middelburg Toll Plaza tomorrow.

Motorists using the N4 are urged to pay extra caution tomorrow, March 28, as the South African Communist Party (SACP) and Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) are planning to picket at the Middelburg Toll Plaza.

The two parties are protesting against the “exorbitant toll fees” on the N4 and N17.

The demonstration will start at 10:00.

In a press statement, the organisations said they are demanding the following from the government:

• Accessible, affordable and reliable roads for all.

• The reduction of toll fees by at least 50 per cent.

• The total control of national roads and the abolishment of concessions or third parties.

• That communities that live near toll roads and regular users of toll gates be exempt from paying toll fees.

• Public transport and other regular users must be subsidised.

• That the social labour plans by the road agencies produce beneficial results for the surrounding communities.
