Woman drives into unsecured hole on Oribi Street

A woman has driven her car into a hole on Oribi Street that the Steve Tshwete Municipality has long known about.

The woman, who does not want to be identified, told the Middelburg Observer, “This is the municipality’s fault, I want them to come and fix this!”

After visiting BJ Digital Printing and Signs, the woman tried to exit the property and drive onto Oribi Street, but between BJ Digital and the road, she accidentally drove into a hole that was not clearly visible to her, as she was sitting in her car.

The accident occurred at 12:15, and no one with proper equipment from the municipality arrived at the scene for over two hours.

The vehicle has its two back wheels in the air.

BJ Digital told the Observer that they informed the municipality of the hole 18 months ago, and the municipality repeatedly said they were going to fix it, but never did.

Six months ago, councillors Johann Dyason and Helda de Klerk asked two managers from the water department to come and inspect the site, but nothing has been done.

BJ Digital had been putting various objects, such as a large stump, in the way of the hole, to prevent someone from driving into it. They stopped, as each object was removed shortly after being placed in front of the hole.

The vehicle was finally recovered at 15:00.
