Crime escalates during month of love

Middelburg is experiencing a surge in crime this month, with the town showing increasing signs of lawlessness, leaving residents fearing for their safety as criminal activities reach alarming levels.

• On Monday, at around 14:00, Ursula Lourens and her husband experienced a harrowing incident at the post office on OR Tambo Street.

While she rushed inside, her husband waited in the car. Suddenly, two men descended upon their Toyota Fortuner. While her husband was busy on the phone, a man attempted to distract him, while the other one managed to force open the passenger side door and snatch her husband’s mobile phone from his grasp.

• A man suspected of breaking into Kanonkop High School and Dennesig Primary School was apprehended last week.

Gary Roos was caught on CCTV footage at Dennesig Primary School. Before that, he allegedly stole Ms Elfrieda Kruger’s vehicle from Middelburg Primary School.

• Last Wednesday, criminals stole copper at a mine on the Bethal road. According to the complainant, who is a security guard at the mine, while patrolling the area, two men approached him and pointed a firearm at him. The men stole copper and fled the scene.

• Last Thursday, Jeanette van Rooyen and her daughter narrowly escaped being hijacked near the Tarries Cycle Park.
The attempted hijackers shot at Ms Van Rooyen’s window, luckily she escaped unharmed, and the suspects fled.

• Adding to the crime spree, another business in Eastdene fell victim to a robbery last week.
Tayyib Halaal Butcher at the Eastdene Centre was targeted by armed assailants who stole cash from the till.
