MHRF leader arrested at Israeli embassy in Pretoria

Councillor Jomo Segage, a member of the Middelburg and Hendrina Residents Front (MHRF) also serving on the front's leadership committee, has been arrested by Brooklyn police in Pretoria.

Segage, who has been a vocal Palestine supporter, was detained by Brooklyn police while protesting outside the Israeli embassy in Pretoria yesterday.

Fellow MHRF councillor and Speaker of Steve Tshwete council Thato Mathunyane, confirmed Segage’s arrest.

He told Middelburg Observer that he hasn’t had the chance to speak to Segage whose phone went straight to voicemail when the Middelburg Observer attempted to contact him for comment.

He did, however, speak to a radio station following his arrest saying he had not been formally charged ahead of the brief interview.

Segage told the station that the Israeli embassy called the police on him, claiming that the protest outside the embassy posed a danger to embassy personnel.

According to Mathunyane, it’s still unclear on what charges Segage is being detained.
He said he would seek clarity from the Brooklyn police today.

Segage told the radio station that he joined the protest outside the Israeli embassy to demand Israel’s abidance to the recent International Court of Justice ruling, where South Africa accused Israel of genocide in Gaza.

The court ordered six preliminary measures, among them for Israel to take all measures to prevent genocidal acts, prevent and punish the direct and public incitement to genocide, and take immediate and effective steps to ensure the provision of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.

Israel was also ordered to preserve evidence of possible genocidal acts against civilians in Gaza.
