TVET College students picket outside court

A large crowd of Nkangala TVET College students gathered outside the Middelburg Magistrates’ Court.

At least three students are due to appear in court after being arrested yesterday by the Middelburg Police.

The students had a standoff with the police and allegedly threw stones at them. The police shot at them with rubber bullets.

A student with a rubber bullet wound was allegedly shot during the protest yesterday.

The arrested students have been charged with public violence.

They are still demanding that NSFAS pay their accommodation fees directly to them rather than to landlords.

Several rubber bullet casings were found after the incident.

The large gathering of students at the magistrates’ court has now dispersed and is heading down Meyer Street towards Brug Street back to their campus.

Motorists are advised to proceed with caution.
