Dr Beyers Naudé closed as Mchunu makes court appearance

The bail application for the security guard accused of shooting and killing a Steve Tshwete Local Municipality employee resumes today at the Middelburg Magistrates' Court.

The section of Dr Beyers Naudé Drive in front of the Middelburg Magistrates’ Court has been cordoned off by police, where picketers have gathered outside in support of the late Tshepo Maseko.

Nqubeko Bright Mchunu, the PPP Protection and Security officer accused of the murder of Maseko, is appearing for bail application today, after his hearing was postponed on Tuesday due to the absence of his lawyer.

Mchunu has been charged with murder and attempted murder, after he allegedly fired the shot that killed Maseko in 2022, during a strike at the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality.

Mchunu previously absconded bail, failing to appear in court for 13 months, which led to his arrest in Soweto where he was allegedly hiding.

• Motorists are advised to make use of alternative routes for the time being as a peaceful demonstration outside court is underway for the duration of Mchunu’s appearance.
