Four vehicles damaged as highway spiking gang strikes again
Four vehicles were left stranded next to the roadside after falling victim to the spiking syndicate last night.
Middelburg residents were urged to remain vigilant when driving along the N12 or N4 after the incidents.
According to Annemarie Bouwer, SACCW Ops Co-ordinator for the Zello Channel, all of the incidents occurred on the N12 at the Witbank conveyor crossing close to the Phola off-ramp between 23:50 and 03:45.
Bouwer confirmed that a man driving a white Amarok, first fell victim to robbers after driving over spikes and leaving his tyres damaged.
The man was led into bushes by his attackers where he was robbed of his cellphone, laptop, wallet and wedding ring.
Due to his vehicle not being equipped with a spare tyre, the man was stranded until the SAPS finally came to his rescue, allowing him to make an urgent phone call to his wife.
He finally made it home at 00:10, after driving the distance back to eMalahleni on his damaged tyres.
At 03:45 three other vehicles also suffered damage to their tyres after driving over rocks that had been packed across the N12.
The three vehicles, however, managed to make it to safety without being robbed.
Bouwer urged motorists to remain vigilant and cautious.
