Nonagenarian, wife and son attacked with sticks and stones in farm attack, robbery

Family attacked at farmstead

Robbers attacked a frail 91-year-old man, his wife and one of his sons during a farm attack.

A family member of the victims said the couple and their son were sitting outside when three men approached them at the farmstead between Middelburg and Stoffberg.

The three robbers asked for a drink of water, and the family obliged.

But as soon as one of the family members arose to fetch the water, the family was attacked with pepper spray.

The robbers also used sticks and stones to assault the three family members, who were treated for injuries at a local hospital following the attack.

The cruel robbers also broke the windows of the family’s home with rocks.

They then made off with a Stihl brush cutter, a solar battery and invertor, as well as the family’s Nissan NP300 bakkie.

The vehicle has not been found, and no arrests have been made.

The family member who spoke to the Middelburg Observer says he believes the couple and their son were attacked due to their frailty.

“They used anything they could grab hold of to assault my parents and brother,” the man said.

Two cellphones were also stolen during the attack, including an old Nokia belonging to the 91-year-old patriarch.

The incident was reported to the Middelburg police, who visited the scene.

The family member says crime in the area between Middelburg and Stoffberg has spiked dramatically.

“More visible policing is necessary to keep the criminals at bay,” the man said.
