N11 still closed, one killed on alternative Stoffberg Road

Alternative routes offer no relief for stranded N11 motorists

The driver of a Isuzu bakkie died last night in a head-on collision on the Stoffberg Road.

The road is currently experiencing an increase in traffic volumes due to the Kranspoort Pass having closed after a truck carrying liquid petroleum gas, rolled on the N11 at Burgers Hill yesterday.

The truck veered off the road and the gas immediately started seeping from the cargo hold.

The road was closed around 16:00 form both directions, and its unclear when it will reopen.

Last night’s scene in the CBD.

It has been confirmed that the N11 is still closed ahead of recovery operations, which will be carried out today.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the alternative Avontuur road, as well as the Elandslaagte route, after numerous vehicles had to be towed on both the Elandslaagte and Avontuur routes due to thick mud, following heavy rains.

However, residents traveling on the Stoffberg road have also reported dangerous potholes littering the R555.

The fatal head-on collision between the Isuzu and a light utility vehicle happened around 20:20 last night.

The Isuzu river was killed on impact while another person was seriously injured and rushed to hospital.

Around the same time a vehicle crashed into a traffic light at the corner of Dr Beyers Naude and Meyer Street last night.

The same vehicle also knocked down a mini-substation.

The deceased has not yet been identified.

According to the latest update the N11 may open after 09:00, but it has not been confirmed.
