Driver warns of spiking on N12, witnesses two incidents

The spiking gang is believed to be still active on the N12 after two incidents were spotted within hours on Sunday evening.

The driver of a shuttle service wishes to warn residents that a spiking gang is active, after driving past two victims in one night.

According to the driver, who requested anonymity, he picked up clients from Middelburg on Sunday at 17:30 and was driving them to the airport when he drove past the incidents.

The first incident involved a group of roughly four ladies, who were stranded next to the roadside between Kendal and Red Star Raceway on the N12.

The second incident was close to Majita’s Livestock, at 18:53, and involved an A-Class Mercedes-Benz. “I am not sure how many people were involved in the second incident, because the driver of the Mercedes kept driving slowly, likely to a safer place. I did see other cars next to the road, but could not see whether they had also been spiked.”

According to the driver, spiking incidents are particularly rife during the pay period.
“From the 29th to the 30th of each month, spiking incidents are bad because people get paid and the roads are busier.”

He also wishes to warn all motorists not to drive over any objects on the road, “Try and avoid any object in the road, even if it is plastic. Drive with your headlights on bright, and if possible, avoid driving in the dark. These incidents happen when it is dark, and being winter, it’s getting darker earlier,” he concluded.
