Witness corroborates teenager’s allegations of abuse during labour

‘I can identify the nurses who beat her up’

An eyewitness has come forward, corroborating the alleged abuse a teenager suffered during labour at Middelburg Hospital.

The witness said that ‘panic set in’ among the group of nurses after they realised that the full-term baby boy of the 16-year-old was in distress.

After four hours in labour, a doctor was called, who delivered the baby.

“But there was just silence, the baby was so quiet,” the witness said.

The woman who spoke to the Middelburg Observer on condition of anonymity said she can even point out the nurses involved with the alleged abuse of the screaming teenager. “I can Identify the nurses who beat her up.”

According to the teenager, she arrived at the hospital in labour at 18:00 on May 31, and delivered the stillborn boy, which she carried over term, at around 22:00, with the help of a doctor.

Before the doctor was called, the teenager alleges that a group of about five nurses were initially involved with the delivery.

The nurses allegedly kept on forcefully pushing on her stomach to push the baby out.

The teenager said that when she screamed out in pain, the nurses ordered her to be quiet, slapped her, and even placed their hands over her mouth and nose to muffle her screams.

When it became evident that the baby was stuck, the nurses called a doctor.

The teenager said the doctor came in, delivered the baby, and left without uttering a word to her.

She was later called to an adjoining room where she was allowed to look at her baby, but not touch him.

The body of the infant was allegedly kept in the room overnight, before being removed to the mortuary, with the girl saying it broke her heart, knowing that her boy had been so close to her.

According to the witness, she heard and saw ‘everything’.

“The teenager is telling the truth,” the witness said.

The witness added that after the teenager delivered the baby, she heard one of the nurses say, “I’m running away because her parents are going to kill us.”

According to the witness, the delivery room was close to an entry point where nurses could observe vehicles entering.

“The nurse correctly thought it was her parents,” the witness said.

But the witness was not the only one who expressed damning indictments on hospital staff, as more than 100 people commented on the original story online, many of whom said they had similar experiences at the Middelburg Hospital.

According to the Department of Health, the baby’s shoulders got stuck, resulting in the stillbirth.

A full investigation has been launched nonetheless.

The witness said she is fully prepared to testify against the offending nurses.
