According to Tshabalala, there will be a three-year contract, and if the municipality feels that motorists are following the rules, there won’t be a need to renew the speed camera contract.

The speed cameras will be operational on specific roads deemed as high-risk, and have the ability to read a number plate from a distance of about 120m to 125m.

The cameras will monitor and regulate traffic violations, speed, and motorists.

The Middelburg Observer went with the municipal team to Dr Mandela Drive for a demonstration of how the speed cameras function, and one unlucky motorist received the inaugural speeding ticket.

The cameras will be monitored through the use of tablets by traffic officials.
