Smart technology speed cameras were launched on Tuesday in the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, led by Executive Mayor Mhlonishwa Masilela.
The MMC of Public Safety, Clr Zandile Ngubeni, Clr Iddy Mahlangu, Clr Paul Williams, the Executive Director of Community Services, Dr Elizabeth Tshabalala, Director Moses Mkhabela, the Deputy Director of Traffic Services, Frank Mohloana and Traffic Official Ayanda Feni attended the event.

According to Tshabalala, there will be a three-year contract, and if the municipality feels that motorists are following the rules, there won’t be a need to renew the speed camera contract.

The speed cameras will be operational on specific roads deemed as high-risk, and have the ability to read a number plate from a distance of about 120m to 125m.

The cameras will monitor and regulate traffic violations, speed, and motorists.
The Middelburg Observer went with the municipal team to Dr Mandela Drive for a demonstration of how the speed cameras function, and one unlucky motorist received the inaugural speeding ticket.
The cameras will be monitored through the use of tablets by traffic officials.
