Rockdale tuck-shop robbed, one arrested

Asylum documents stolen during robbery.

A man has been arrested for allegedly robbing a Rockdale tuck-shop with a number of cohorts around 17:00.

The shopkeeper and an assistant was inside the tuck-shop when a white Nissan bakkie stopped in front of the Rockdale outlet.

A man stepped from the bakkie and entered the store where he pointed a firearm at the victims.

They were ordered to lay down, which the assistant complied with.

The shopkeeper, however, confronted the robber in an attempt to disarm him.

The robber was too strong and overpowered the shopkeeper.

After the brief scuffle the overpowered shopkeeper was assaulted with the butt of the weapon.

He was hit on the head and on the mouth numerous times.

Two more robbers then entered the tuck-shop where they proceeded to steal cash, four cartons of cigarettes, four cell phones, numerous bags of maizemeal and asylum documents.

Police were dispatched and their rapid response resulted in one arrest and a bakkie, presumably used in the robbery, was confiscated.

The suspect will appear in court on Monday.
