Soweto Marathon accident: Help Dezi Du Plessis heal

Dezi du Plessis critical after being struck by a taxi while participating in the Soweto Marathon on 29 November.

On 29 November 2025, what should have been a day of inspiration, achievement and doing what she loves, turned into a devastating tragedy for our dear friend, Dezi. While participating in the Soweto Marathon, the marathon athlete was struck by a taxi on the route. In a moment, her life – and the lives of her loved ones – changed.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) says the incident happened near the intersection of the Soweto Highway and Main Road/Mooki Street in Orlando East. During the marathon, Dezi was seriously injured whilst running, when the unauthorised vehicle forced its way onto the route and collided with her.

Dezi is now in critical condition in hospital, fighting for her life. Her injuries are severe, and doctors have warned that should she pull through, she may face a long and difficult journey of rehabilitation, therapy, and ongoing medical treatment. According African Bank Soweto Marathon’s media statement, the driver of the taxi has been arrested for reckless and negligent driving and is suspected to have been driving under the influence of alcohol.

To make this heart-breaking situation even more overwhelming, she has no medical aid. Every day in hospital adds to mounting medical bills, and the expected rehabilitation costs are far beyond what her family can afford on their own. The Athletics South Africa (ASA) license only covers a maximum of R25000 in costs and to make matters worse, it follows a lengthy process to receive any assistance.

But the greatest weight rests on the hearts of those who love her most: Dezi is a devoted mother of two young children who now need care, stability, and support while their mom fights to recover. Her family is doing everything they can, but the sudden emotional and financial strain is immense.
