Help the Welman family bury their son with dignity

The well-known grey-haired man who was always standing at the robot on the corner of Lilian Ngoyi and Beyers Naude streets, died on Friday.

The Welman family are still struggling to come to terms with the sudden passing of their son, Marius Welman (57), following a short illness.

Marius was well known across town, as many would always see him standing near the Sasol Garage on the corner of Dr Beyers Naude and Lilian Ngoyi streets.

According to his sister-in-law, Anette Welman, Marius came home last Tuesday, complaining of stomach pain, and was taken to King Nyabela Hospital by a good Samaritan.
Anette said he passed away last Friday night, and the family learnt of his passing the next morning.

“We were saddened and shocked when we heard of his passing,” Anette said. “Till now, we are left with more questions than answers. We are struggling to put together funds to ensure we give him a dignified send-off. We are grateful to all those who have been able to donate.”

After his sudden death, the family faced the challenge of arranging his burial. They expressed deep gratitude to Everest Funerals, which offered a more affordable cremation option in their time of need.

Anette said they managed to raise just over R4 000, and are short of R5 000 to ensure their brother’s cremation is finalised by Monday.

A small remembrance ceremony will be held at Marius’s home next Tuesday to celebrate his life.

Marius left behind two siblings and his 82-year-old mother, who depends on her Sassa grant to survive.

He will be remembered by his family as a loving, thoughtful, caring person who had a big heart and never got angry at anyone.

The family would appreciate any assistance from the community during this difficult time.

Those who wish to help the Welmans give Marius a dignified farewell can contact Anette on 079 010 6570.
