A last ‘cheers’ for Geoff Wingate-Pearse

Only golf compared to the love Geoff's had for his family.

Middelburg Golf Club raised a last ‘cheers’ for Geoff Wingate-Pearse, who passed away on December 7th in Mediclinic Cape Hospital.

Geoff and his wife Carol moved to Middelburg in 1979, where they raised their family and forged lasting legacies over the span of 41 years.

The couple spent 33 of those years in their Leipoldt Street home, which was across from the entrance to the Middelburg Country Club.

Geoff was an entrepreneur and started East Auto Hydraulics, which he successfully ran since 1979.

Carol started Middelburg’s first English nursery school, Sunbeams Nursery School, and assumed the administrative lead for 18 years.

The couple moved to Cape Town in November 2020 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

He peacefully passed on December 5 after being admitted for treatment for oesophageal complications, after being diagnosed three months prior to his passing.

Geoff went to Middelburg Primary School and matriculated at Belfast High School.

Later in life, golf became Geoff’s biggest passion, apart from his family.

He took his golf very seriously! Some of his playing mates called him ‘Chopper Pearse’ because he liked to throw his clubs when he didn’t play his shot just right.

He also loved to braai and was glued to the TV set for each and every sport.

Geoff had close ties with the country club where he served as Vice Golf Captain, then Golf Captain, Vice President, and finally President.

He also played squash and later bowls, but golf remained his primary penchant.

Geoff is survived by his son, Jared, daughter-in-law Britt, their children, Grayson (2) and six-month-old twins Rachel and Everly, his daughter Gaylyn, son-in-law Justin, and 21-month-old Pippa.

He also leaves behind his sister, Joan-Mary Monaghan, and her husband, Pat, who lived in eMalahleni for about 30 years before they moved to Hermanus in 2014.

His memorial service will take place at the retirement village Le Vie Est Belle, on Saturday, December 20, from 16:00 to 18:00.
