Update: Suspect arrested in LD Moetanalo stabbing

A suspect is due in court tomorrow following his arrest in the fatal stabbing of an LD Moetanalo High School learner.

A suspect, reportedly 20 years old, was arrested last night in connection with the fatal stabbing of an LD Moetanalo High School learner on the school premises earlier yesterday.
The suspect’s name is being withheld because he will only be appearing in court tomorrow on a charge of murder.

A video circulated on social media last night shows enraged community members gathered outside the suspect’s home, wanting to take matters into their own hands, but the suspect had already been arrested by then.

The learner who was stabbed has been identified as Kamogelo Sphamandla Matsepe (18), reportedly from Tokologo in Mhluzi. It is alleged that an argument broke out between the learners, which escalated into the fatal stabbing.

The suspect was apprehended after being sought throughout the day by both community members and the police. He is expected to appear before the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, where bail proceedings are anticipated.

The Mhluzi community remains outraged by what many have described as a senseless taking of an innocent life with a promising future. Matsipe was well-liked by friends, family, and community members and will be remembered for his contribution to Jento United FC, where he played soccer.

• The Middelburg Observer has also received reports that parents went to the school this morning to express their dissatisfaction over learners returning to school so soon after the traumatic incident. Many learners reportedly witnessed the stabbing and remain deeply affected.

Some parents raised concerns about how learners are expected to concentrate in class when the area where Matsipe lost his life was still visibly marked with blood.

School management informed parents that counselling services had been arranged for affected learners and encouraged them to attend school so they could receive the necessary psychological support.

A witness further told the Observer that while parents were at the school, two learners were seen chasing each other when a knife allegedly fell from one of them. It is said the other learner ran into the school when he was almost allegedly stabbed. Parents alerted police officers who were stationed at the school, and the learner was pursued. It remains unclear whether the learner was apprehended.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
