From the streets to the stage

A powerful youth movement from Mhluzi is using dance to inspire change and uplift the next generation.

Mtoni Street Battle Dance Movement was founded in 2021 by Khutso Prescila Masha and has been running for six years now.

Born in Dennilton, Khutso relocated to Mhluzi (Tokologo) with both her parents in 1996, at the age of three months. Growing up, Khutso was always an active child who loved to dance and participate in dance competitions and now works as a dancer, motivational speaker, and brand promoter.

Khutso said she created the group to encourage kids to stay away from crime, follow their dreams, and make a living out of their talent.

Her vision is to provide a safe platform where children and teenagers can build confidence and focus on positive growth instead of negative influences.

The dance group mentors youngsters from seven to 21 and currently has close to 50 members. The dancers often visit Khutso’s house to practice and improve their dance skills when not busy with schoolwork.

The group plans to hold a dance battle competition at Mhluzi Extension 7 on April 4, and 30 youngsters are expected to participate in the competition.

The event will give young musicians a chance to showcase their talents on stage and small business owners a chance to promote their products and services on the day.

Community members, local businesses, and stakeholders are welcome to support the initiative in any way.
