MiddiesAgri Blinkwater Boertjie Challenge kicks off at MHS

Grade 12 agricultural learners at Hoërskool Middelburg are stepping into the world of maize markets in a hands-on trading competition run by Blinkwater Mills.

Grade 12 agricultural learners at Hoërskool Middelburg are stepping into the shoes of real farmers in a high-stakes maize trading challenge guided by Blinkwater Mills Grain buyer Attie van den Berg and agri-educator Christiaan Gouws.

The Blinkwater Boertjie Challenge, part of the Blinkwater Mills & Hoërskool Middelburg Maize Marketing Competition, gives learners a taste of the real decisions farmers face when selling their crops.

Each learner receives 1000 tons of simulated white maize to trade with before, during and after a 10-week delivery period from May 1 to June 30 (100 tons delivery each week) for the 2026/2027 season. Using daily SAFEX market prices, learners must decide when to sell their maize and at what price based on market expectations.

But there’s a catch – once the maize is priced, the decision is final. No going back.

Weekly payments are calculated every Friday, and once paid; the money begins earning interest, adding another layer of strategy as learners weigh up risk, timing, and potential profit.

To keep things realistic, Middies teacher Christiaan Gouws will also introduce surprise market shocks during the competition, including drought announcements, crop estimates, exchange rate swings, and export demand changes. These unexpected twists mirror the pressures farmers face in real markets, forcing learners to think quickly and decide whether to hold or sell their maize.

Weekly rankings will track the learners’ performance, turning the classroom into a competitive trading floor as strategies unfold.

At the end of September when the season ends, the top three learners will receive agricultural prizes, with first place winning a maize prize sponsored by Blinkwater Mills.

Blinkwater Mills, based in Stoffberg, Mpumalanga, partnered with the school to help learners gain real-world experience in agriculture, markets and the calculated risks farmers take every season.

As the competition unfolds, the community will be able to follow the weekly standings.

May the best MiddiesAgri Blinkwater Boertjie win.
