Middelburg mortuary appeals to families to help identify 17 unclaimed bodies

Authorities are urging families searching for missing loved ones to visit the Middelburg mortuary, where 17 unidentified bodies have remained unclaimed from October last year till now.

The Middelburg Mortuary has issued an urgent appeal to members of the public to assist in identifying several unclaimed bodies.

According to officials, a total of 17 bodies have been admitted to the facility between October last year and March this year and remain unidentified. Two of these bodies, which were recovered in the Hendrina area, were already in an advanced state of decomposition, making identification particularly difficult.

The remaining 15 bodies originate from Middelburg and surrounding areas, including Blinkpan, raising concerns that families may still be searching for missing relatives without realising their loved ones could be at the mortuary.

Anyone with a missing family member or who may have lost contact with a loved one is urged to visit the mortuary in person. Timely identification is crucial to ensure dignified handling and closure for families.

The Middelburg Mortuary is situated at the old Middelburg Hospital, with the entrance located in Hospital Street. For more information, members of the public can contact the mortuary on 013 243 4232.
