The discovery follows a terrifying ordeal for a local couple who were violently assaulted in their home days earlier.

The body of a man was found near the Klein Olifants River in Brug Street, behind Nkangala College in Middelburg on today, July 29.

The body was spotted by a student who went to the bushes close to the river to relieve himself.

According to information obtained by the Observer, the student immediately flagged down a police vehicle passing along Brug Street.

Wife details brutal attack

A woman who identified herself as the man’s wife said they were attacked early on Sunday morning, between 01:00 and 02:00.

She said the brutal assault lasted about an hour and a half, and the attackers damaged part of their shack during the incident.

“There were about three to four attackers,” she said.

She said she had left him briefly to look for food, only to return this afternoon and find police officers and a police vehicle near where they live.

At the time of writing, SAPS was on the scene awaiting an ambulance.
