Middelburg is an extortion hotspot, the Middelburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has warned. “The impact of extortion on our economy is staggering and all sectors are affected,” said Chamber CEO Anna-Marth Ott. This was highlighted during an extortion training session led by Lieutenant Colonel Kwena Mashilo of the SAPS Provincial Organised Crime Unit on July 30.

Syndicates target local infrastructure and transport

Mashilo said various pillars are essential to the success of the Organised Crime Unit. Communication between the SAPS and businesses is key to empowering everyone to combat criminal activity. Extortion is linked to infrastructure, with threats to businesses in the industrial area, mines, construction and transport among those affected. He explained that organised criminal groups use intimidation, threats and violence to force businesses to pay or award contracts, often causing significant financial losses. During the discussion, several business representatives shared experiences of organised groups pretending to represent particular sectors of the community. A common tactic is using fake or invalid NPO registrations to disrupt operations, demand payments and intimidate employees. Concerns were also raised about victims being reluctant to open cases due to fear of retaliation and a lack of confidence in the reporting process.

Dedicated police team standby numbers promised

“Extortion has always been a way of life in Middelburg, but it should not be this way,” Mashilo said. He encouraged businesses to report incidents directly to the Provincial Extortion Team. “Make sure you know who you are dealing with and have relevant information. Assist the police with the right information, even if you suspect it is fake.” He added that Mpumalanga Organised Crime has assured members of rapid response and support throughout investigations. The SAPS acknowledged these challenges and agreed to provide dedicated contact numbers of the extortion team members who are on standby. The MCCI and the SAPS are committed to continued engagement to strengthen co-operation and improve responses to extortion incidents.
