Nova Talks crowns Harvest Cafe as top business idea
Two Nova Pioneer Midrand matriculants impressed the judges with their business idea, Harvest Cafe, to win the Nova Talks (Shark Tank) competition against teams from Nova Pioneer Midrand and Nova Pioneer Ormonde.
Innovation, creativity and entrepreneurial thinking took centre stage as learners from Nova Pioneer Midrand and Nova Pioneer Ormonde showcased their business ideas during the annual Nova Talks (Shark Tank) competition.
The participating learners were challenged to examine problems in their communities or the country at large and develop ideas to address them, whether financial, social, or economic.

Walking away with the top prize were Kgomotso Chakela and Mphini Chauke, both matric learners from Nova Pioneer Midrand, whose business concept, Harvest Café, impressed the judges and secured first place.

The pair described their experience in the competition and how winning felt for them.
“Coming into this, we were very nervous, but I must say it was worth it; after the first minute of presenting, we got our footing,” said Kgomotso.
“In last year’s competition we didn’t win anything, so we didn’t think this year we would win; hence, when they called our names up there, we were in disbelief,” added Mphini.
The competition challenged learners to develop and pitch innovative business ideas before a panel of judges, testing their problem-solving abilities, creativity and presentation skills in a Shark Tank-style environment.

“Nova Talks is a Ted style kind of event where our learners who have been part of a programme of innovation and leadership for the past five years share their journey. They get to reflect on their successes and failures because we believe failing is part of the journey of leadership.”
Second place was awarded to Career Cloak, presented by Tshiamo Rakgetse, Candice Dube and Mihlali Mdunge. Their business idea demonstrated innovation and a clear understanding of addressing real-world needs through entrepreneurship.

Third place went to The First Investor, developed by Mamello Lushozi, whose idea also impressed the judging panel and secured a place among the competition’s top entries.
Beyond recognising outstanding business ideas, the competition encouraged learners to think critically about challenges facing society and explore practical, sustainable solutions through entrepreneurship.
By allowing learners to pitch their ideas in a competitive environment, Nova Pioneer continues to foster innovation and prepare young people with the skills needed to thrive as future entrepreneurs and leaders.
The success of Harvest Café, Career Cloak and The First Investor highlighted the creativity and determination of the participating learners, demonstrating that the next generation of South African entrepreneurs is already developing ideas with the potential to make a meaningful impact.
